Like every branch of the Wehrmacht, the infantry also possessed numerous medals and decorations. The Infantry Assault Badge was a bravery award introduced in 1939 by the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Walther von Brauchitsch.
The Infantry Assault Badge (in silver or bronze) could be awarded to officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of rifle companies of non-motorized infantry divisions and mountain infantry companies who, from 1940 onward, "participated in assault attacks, in the front line, breaking in with weapons in hand, or on three separate days of combat." The zinc-plated badge depicts a carbine with a bayonet mounted, surrounded by an oak leaf wreath.
