In 1933, the Reich Youth Leadership and the German Labor Front initiated the organization of Reich vocational competitions, with the first competitions taking place in 1934. These were organized by the German Labor Front and the Hitler Youth (HJ) – initially only for young people. The competitions were held at various levels: local competitions, district competitions, regional competitions, and finally the national competition. Badges were awarded in three categories: bronze for district winners, silver for regional winners, and gold-plated for national winners, each of which was also recognizable by the curved lettering at the top of the badge.

The badge is a pin-on decoration consisting of a laurel wreath, in the center of which is a national eagle with outstretched wings projecting beyond the edge of the circle. It holds a combination of the cogwheel of the German Labor Front and the diamond of the Hitler Youth in its claws.
